Course Goals

As an educator we want what is best for children  In order to do what is best for children, we learn the best strategies to teach all types of children, we communicate with parents and we learn how to best build relationships with children.  These are all great ways to educate he child and to help them become their best.  One area that I need to grow in as an educator is the outside of the classroom area.  With this class I have a few goals I would like to challenge myself to gain knowledge on during this class.
My goals are:
  1. I would like to become more familiar with educational policies.  I would like to understand how the policies are finalized and the steps needed to create a policy or change a policy.  With the common core, and the new educational policies that have come in to place, I would like to understand them in order to communicate effectively with my students and parents and colleagues.
  2. I would like to gain knowledge on how to begin organizing educational programs for students with dyslexia.   I would like to look at other organizations and determine what is needed in order to establish a program or to extend a program.
  3. I would like be able to communicate with parents about the policies and programs state wide.  As an educator, we are asked so many questions that goes along with common core and many questions we are not able to answer because we are not up to date with the policies and procedures when it comes to public education.  As an educator, I would like to be able explain and show my parents why we are incorporating such programs and why this measure is on a report card etc.  Because right now, there are a few areas that as educators, we have expressed a concern and heard nothing back.  With my first goal, I would hope to be able to learn about the policies and procedures and in return use the knowledge to incorporate programs that are best for ALL children.
I am looking forward to this class.  I cannot wait to learn what more I can do to enrich the lives of children and our future!!!

  1. I so agree with you Brittany, as an educator I want what is best for all children; thereupon, as you stated in your first goal that you want to be able to communicate valuable information about policies; this is an attainable goal for all of us. Shedding light on important information with the truth of the matter helps the individuals that are involved or have a stake in the matter at hand to apply the information purposefully. Could you imagine going to the doctor with a loved one who was sick and the doctor withheld information or only told you here-say?
Knowing the facts and then giving the facts is guidance to families and children and is the core of support. All of us need information; yet, without knowing the exacts of a policy we could lead a family down the wrong path of support. I too will take interest in becoming well read on ECE policies so I repeat them exactly to the families and children I serve.
I love what I read in my graduate studies about ethical and truthful communication endorsed by the National Communication Association Credo For Ethical Communication. I use this statement by the National Communication Association as a professional and personal guideline when receiving information from anyone. They state ----- "We advocate truthfulness, accuracy, honesty, and reason as essential to the integrity of communication," (O'Hair & Wiemann, 2012, p. 15). Although, I speak as accurate to what I know to be the truth, sometimes the people around me don't; therefore, I try to adhere what is being spoken to this statement.
    Sincerely,
    Kimberly

  2. Brittany,
Your feelings and goals for this course is resounded throughout many of the posts I have read. It is so refreshing to read about so many educators driven to put children first and strive to build better relationships with them and their families. I very interested to learn more about what you discover about creating programs for students with dyslexia. That is truly an area that is lacking services in many school districts. Often times I hear teachers say they believe a student has dyslexia, but no one really knows what to do after that. There is no particular procedure or program to follow in order to have the student identified. I believe that this course will enable us to take a step back and evaluate how our schools operate which will give us a deeper understanding of our greater purpose as educators. Julie Franklin

  3. I do not know anything about policy either, and am looking forward, as this class proceeds, to understand how to go about forming and writing policy, so that I can start to change the wordage in the field of early childhood education to include and to be welcoming to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) families and those children we have in our classrooms from LGBT headed families. This wording is non existent at this point in time.

  4. I concur with you that every educator should have knowledge of strategies that enable them to teach all types of children. Ordinarily, a teacher’s mandate is to disseminate information to students and develop lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives as well as facilitate learning by establishing a relationship with students. If they cannot do that, they do not deserve to be in those classrooms. Additionally educators should develop and foster the appropriate skills and social abilities to enable the optimum development of children, according to age, ability and aptitude.
